It is a mandatory requirement under The Income-tax Act, 1961 to link Aadhaar with PAN (Permanent Account Number). The prescribed last date of linking Aadhaar with PAN is 30th Sep, 2021.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made it mandatory to link AADHAAR with PAN on the Income Tax portal by 30th Sep, 2021. Aadhaar is a verifiable 12-digit identification number issued by UIDAI to the resident of India for free of cost.
Section 234H (inserted via Finance Act 2021) of The Income-tax Act, 1961 specifies a fee/penalty for up to Rs 1000 If a person defaults in linking the Aadhar Number with a Permanent Account Number within the prescribed date.
If the PAN is not linked to Aadhaar within the prescribed date, then Apart from the penalty of up to Rs 1000, The PAN will become inoperative from 01st Oct 2021 and it can’t be used to conduct the financial transactions wherever quoting of PAN is mandatory.
There are two methods to link Aadhaar with the PAN as explained below:
To link PAN with Aadhaar Send an SMS from the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. follow the steps mentioned below:
PAN can be linked with Aadhaar through the new Income Tax portal either by logging into the portal or without logging into the portal.

To check the status of the Aadhaar through the Income Tax portal, click here. You just need to mention PAN and Aadhaar to know the status. After filling in PAN and Aadhaar, click on “View Link Aadhaar Status”. Whether you are registered or not, you can check the status without logging in.
If you have not made any request on the new Income Tax portal to link Aadhaar with the PAN nad you are not sure whether your Aadhaar is linked or not, then you can check by following the below mentioned steps:
Though you have linked the PAN with the Aadhaar card, still there may be some mismatch of details between the PAN and the Aadhaar details. The mismatch can be seen by clicking on the “Compare with PAN & Aadhaar” option under my profile tab. You will see the reason for the mismatch in a comparative table format, as below, where the difference has been highlighted in the light pink color.
A permanent account number is a 10 character alphanumeric number, issued by the Indian Income Tax Department, to any “person” who applies for it or to whom the department allots the number without an application. All tax-related information for a person/company is recorded against a single PAN number.

1. An individual who is not a citizen of India
2. An individual who is Non-Resident as per the Income tax Act, 1961
3. An individual with the age of 80 years or more
4. An individual residing in the states of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya
