It is a mandatory requirement under The Income-tax Act, 1961 to link Aadhaar with PAN (Permanent Account Number). The prescribed last date of linking Aadhaar with PAN is 30th Sep, 2021.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made it mandatory to link AADHAAR with PAN on the Income Tax portal by 30th Sep, 2021. Aadhaar is a verifiable 12-digit identification number issued by UIDAI to the resident of India for free of cost.
Section 234H (inserted via Finance Act 2021) of The Income-tax Act, 1961 specifies a fee/penalty for up to Rs 1000 If a person defaults in linking the Aadhar Number with a Permanent Account Number within the prescribed date.
If the PAN is not linked to Aadhaar within the prescribed date, then Apart from the penalty of up to Rs 1000, The PAN will become inoperative from 01st Oct 2021 and it can’t be used to conduct the financial transactions wherever quoting of PAN is mandatory.

How to link Aadhaar with PAN?
There are two methods to link Aadhaar with the PAN as explained below:
Linking PAN through an SMS
To link PAN with Aadhaar Send an SMS from the mobile number registered with Aadhaar. follow the steps mentioned below:
- Step 1: Type UIDPAN<12-digit Aadhaar><10-digit PAN> on your mobile
- Step 2: Send it to (NSDL or UTIITSL) 567678 or 56161
Linking PAN with Aadhaar Online (Through the Income Tax Portal)
PAN can be linked with Aadhaar through the new Income Tax portal either by logging into the portal or without logging into the portal.

Linking by login to the Income Tax portal
- Go to the Income Tax portal
- Log in through any of the USER ID’s such as PAN or Aadhaar or Other USER ID applicable
- On your Dashboard, under the Link Aadhaar to PAN option, click Link. You can also access this service from My Profile > Link Aadhaar
- Your Name, Date of birth, and Gender as per PAN will be pre-filled and non-editable. Enter your Aadhaar Number and Name as per the Aadhaar.
- If you have only year of birth on your Aadhaar card, click I have only year of birth in the Aadhaar card.
- Select I agree to validate my Aadhaar details. Then, click “Link Aadhaar”.
- On successful validation, a message will display your “Link Aadhaar status”.
Linking without login to the Income Tax portal
- Go to the Income Tax portal, click link Aadhaar
- On the link Aadhaar page, Enter your PAN, Aadhaar, Name as per the Aadhaar, Mobile Number
- If you have only year of birth on your Aadhaar card, click I have only year of birth in the Aadhaar card.
- Click on “Link Aadhaar”, You will receive a 6-digit OTP on your registered mobile number. On the Verification page, enter the OTP and click Validate.
- If successful, you will get a message about your Aadhaar PAN linking request being sent to UIDAI.
Status of Aadhaar linking
To check the status of the Aadhaar through the Income Tax portal, click here. You just need to mention PAN and Aadhaar to know the status. After filling in PAN and Aadhaar, click on “View Link Aadhaar Status”. Whether you are registered or not, you can check the status without logging in.
Check whether Aadhaar is linked to the PAN
If you have not made any request on the new Income Tax portal to link Aadhaar with the PAN nad you are not sure whether your Aadhaar is linked or not, then you can check by following the below mentioned steps:
- Go to the new income tax portal with the link, and login into your profile from any of the USER IDs such as PAN/Aadhaar/Other USER IDs.
- Then go to the My Profile tab, your personal details will open. Below the personal details heading, there is a profile tab, if your Aadhaar is linked with the PAN then you will see “Linked” written along with a green tick.
PAN is linked but still mismatch with the Aadhaar details
Though you have linked the PAN with the Aadhaar card, still there may be some mismatch of details between the PAN and the Aadhaar details. The mismatch can be seen by clicking on the “Compare with PAN & Aadhaar” option under my profile tab. You will see the reason for the mismatch in a comparative table format, as below, where the difference has been highlighted in the light pink color.
